The Story of JeMs
by Joyce Schlegel
"In 2005, I heard two little words that would change my life.

Virtual Assistant.

I didn't know anything about a Virtual Assistant (VA) or what they did, but those two little words wouldn't leave me. They kept whispering through my mind, much like a catchy tune that goes around and around in your head. They compelled me to find out more.

Starting with researching everything related to the Virtual Assistant Industry, I could feel the excitement building as I read page after page of information. For years, I had been searching for a business idea of my own, had dreamed of how it would be, and prayed for guidance. I knew instinctively that this Virtual Assistant thing was perfect for me.

Already possessing the skills and many years of experience in office administration required for a Virtual Assistant business, I took many courses to upgrade and to add to my skills, talked to other VAs and found my niche. I studied website design and internet marketing strategies, much of it at night after a long grueling day at the office. I kept my eye always on the goal, and worked steadily towards realizing my dream. Nothing of value happens quickly, and it took literally years of research, planning and studying before opening day

Coming up with a name for my business was easy, a combination of my initials (Joyce Marlene Schlegel) and my husband's first name (Ernie). JeMs is a bit of a twist on "gems", as something of value and precious. That's the image I wanted my business to be, something profoundly of value. As my business would be. I would work hard and make it so.

I had an excellent role model to emulate for my own business. Entrepreneurship is nothing new to the Schlegel family, and I wanted to embrace the family values of personal integrity, honesty, caring, and high quality service in my own business.

In June 2011, I took the scary step of leaving my full time job. It was an equally exciting and scary time. But I didn't look back, I was too focused on the future.

In July 2011, with sheer determination, dogged persistence and a giant leap of faith, JeMs Virtual Assistant Services opened it's doors..Well, you know, virtually opened it's doors. It's the best thing I've ever done! Every day, JeMs brings me new challenges and enjoyments, and a growing list of satisfied clients.

My wish is that others may also find the inspiration to follow their dreams, as I have found in those two little words."

I have a long list of people to thank for helping me along the road to my business launch and success.

Thank you to my clients for deciding to work virtually with JeMs. We have established mutually satisfying working relationships, built on trust and confidence. I look forward to many years of working with you.

To my extended family, the Schlegels and Lockharts, thank you for your sound business advice, guidance and support when I was in the initial stages of setting up my business venture. You encouraged me to go for it and helped point me in the right direction. Thank you!

To my husband Ernie, you never wavered in your belief that I could do this. Thank you for your faith in me, your love, your patience and for being my biggest supporter. Thank you for believing in me, when I took the scary step of quitting my full time job to chase a dream.

Thank you also to my good friends who cheered me on and pulled me up by the bootstraps when I blundered and whined. Especially to the "Wisteria Lane Misfits and Wannabees" gang, for keeping me sane. Good friends are such a treasure.

Thank you to Craig and Kelly Cannings at VA Classroom, and the many VA mentors and associates I've had the pleasure of meeting. Thank you for the lessons and encouragement when the "mind-monkeys" (a term used by Claire Mitchell at The Girls Mean Businesscrowded in and made me doubt.

My love to all!
